Play Doh Create ABCs (best Android apps for kids)

Play Doh is a staple resource for any early learning program. Useful for expressing creativity, developing fine motor skills, learning about colors, and more, Play Doh will no doubt be around for a long time yet. Now branching out into app development, virtual Play Doh continues to provide a varied learning experience, all with the no mess portability of a tablet!

Play Doh's Create ABCs allows for three user profiles, who are then tracked through the Parent's Corner of the settings. There are three activities:

1. Write and Craft
2. Create and Share
3. Letter Matching

Write and Craft has letter tracing practice, with virtual Play Doh as the medium. Letter tracing is scaffolded with an animation of dots following the lines of the letter, with a beginning and ending points. Incorrectly following the letter will result in a verbal prompt to "Give it another try" or and encouraging "Oops, almost!" Once the letter is correctly traced, verbal praise is given and the child is rewarded with a short poem about an object beginning with that letter.

Write and Craft then moves to a puzzle activity, allowing the user to put together an object of the letter they just traced. Each part of the object is dragged onto a faint image of the original, like fitting pieces of a puzzle together. The user can change the color of the Play Doh they use, and once finished, has the choice of either saving or squishing the object. Too much fun squishing to save these objects!

Create and Share is a sticker-type of activity, creating a scene using all of the letters and objects created so far. Once the user has finished creating a scene, it can be saved as an image and then shared through the gallery function of the tablet.

Letter matching is a beginning sound activity, requiring the user to drag the letter shown onto one of three objects. A wrong placement results in the verbal prompt, "No, that doesn't start with this letter. Try again!" and the correct placement results in the verbal praise, "Great job."

Young children will love this app because of it's colorful squishy looking writing and the simple objects that are created using the virtual Play Doh. Having real Play Doh nearby is a terrific idea so that they can even be inspired to switch off the tablet and go create with the real thing!
