Alphabet Goop (best free educational Android apps for kids)

Alphabet Goop is one of the many fully free and always free educational apps from TVO Kids. Designed for preschoolers to practice beginning sounds, this app is a great launching pad for parents to spend time reinforcing those sounds with objects around the home. There are no ads or in-app purchases, giving parents peace of mind with downloading this app.

TVO Kids presenter, Gisele, explains exactly what is required of the player in "How to Play". When the player taps "Start Playing", Gisele recites the following:

Now it's time for Alphabet Goop
It's colder than ice-cream and hotter than soup
Let's stir really hard, who knows what we'll see
I see two letters, they're coming at me

Two letters are then placed on either side of the screen and four objects appear, one at a time, that need to be placed under the letter the object begins with. Throughout the activity, Gisele gives verbal directions and praise, making this a useful app for children who need that extra support. If an object is placed under the wrong letter, the player is encouraged to try again. Admittedly, with only four objects and two letter choices, it can become a process of elimination to sort the objects, but with the extra audio support, "J J J jet, starts with the letter J, good job!" children will still have those beginning sounds reinforced.

This is not mind-blowing stuff, and without level progression or progress tracking, Alphabet Goop may only hold your little one's attention for a short span of time, but at that age and stage, learning is better shared with significant others rather than screens anyway. Be sure to check out the off-screen activities that are suggested by TVO Kids and have fun with your kid. Enjoy!

Gisele asks players for the first letter of objects she stirs up from her alphabet bowl. This is a phonics based game and it helps your child recognize and match letters of the alphabet, one of the skills necessary for learning to read. This game is designed for children ages 2 - 5.
