Fizzy's Lunch Lab Fresh Pick
Another great PBS Kids app, Fresh Pick is a fantastically presented, highly engaging educational app for older kids. Three profiles can be created in the game, which should stop the squabbles, but perhaps increase the competition between your kids to better each others' high scores. There are eight challenges in all with nine levels to achieve in each challenge. The challenges each tackle a different skill, and include the following: grid mapping (using arrows to direct a character to a goal) , maths with money (buying groceries within a budget, giving change using various coins), positional language (above, under, next to), comprehension (choosing an item according to its description) and process of elimination (guess who type of game, serving food).

Even Monsters Get Sick

Books, books and more books. I cannot get enough book apps! I can't believe I actually put off getting this particular app, because it's about monsters. This monster is not the least bit scary! He is rather sick, though, and so his behavior is not the best. Since he appears lazy and boring, Zub's original owner trades him for three stickers, two sticks of gum and a skateboard. The narrator then describes all the different fun activities in which he involves his new monster pet, but Zub still seems bored. Eventually, Zub the monster is found to be sick, nursed back to health and is finally able to be actively involved in further fun activities.

NASA HIAD

HIAD (Hypersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator) is a cutting edge new development in space technology that NASA hopes to use to enhance space exploration. Whereas old-school planetary landing vehicles were limited to cargo weight and prone to, well, erupting into flames in the atmosphere or while landing, the HIAD uses an inflatable parachute that allows heavier cargo to be landed at a slower rate with more control, eliminating the weight restrictions and the kaboom factor of atmospheric entry.

Rhinomite

This games focuses on spatial prepositions such as Over, Under, Beneath, Around and Through which are important to early language learning, and later investigations in mathematics and physics. In Rhinomite these words are showcased in a style inspired by the flare of classic comic book superheroes. We also display pertinent numerical information as points are earned or traded in for costumes.

Rhinomite is an open-ended game of flight and flexibility, that allows players to bring their own scenarios of sleuthing, mystery and intrigue to this imaginative setting. We supply the costumes, the challenge and the magic, but the child will supply the tale. We hope your budding young authors will create interesting motivations, conflicts, and triumphs for our fresh new character we call Rhinomite!
