Top 12 Learn-To-Write Apps (best educational Android apps for kids)

Here are the Top 12 Apps to help children learn to write. A good quality stylus is recommended, although not necessary and the Crabby Writer app develops pincer grip used to hold writing implements. These Top Apps have been chosen because they are high quality, ad free (with the exception of the last app) and apps that are engaging, give feedback on accuracy, allow multiple users and/or track progress. All of the paid apps have lite versions so you can try before you buy with a couple of apps on the list being fully free.

Crabby Writer

We gave Crabby Writer three-and-a-half stars at smartappsforkids.com when it cost $2.99, making it a tremendous value now that it's free. At its heart it's a tracing/handwriting app, but it was designed by a teacher, so it requires the proper pinching motion to do successfully. Unique and terrific stuff.

Emilie Bottomed Lined it this way: "Cute graphics with a good mix of early literacy skills and some fun in the sun. CCSS aligned."

Read Write Phonics

This is what we are here for: to help you find the best kids' apps on Android. This most definitely fits into that category. One of the more excellent early literacy apps, Read Write Phonics has a bit of everything: learning letters/sounds, sounding out words, handwriting. What a fantastic resource for teachers or homeschoolers!

Read Write Phonics is a UK based developer who has produced an app that will be hard to beat. Excellent graphics with an aesthetic presentation, and easy to follow instructions for the activities, this is definitely one I will be using repeatedly.

Playground 3

This is the final app in the series of three by Jan Essig that we are featuring. This app, unlike the other two, focuses on language skills, specifically alphabet letter names and sounds. Jan seems to have a knack of jamming a lot of activities into one app, and it would take your child quite some time to complete all of them. Actually, this app would be especially good for children with intellectual disability because there is so much repetition and reinforcement for each letter. I would be surprised if any child playing this game did not come away with a strong phonics base — a foundational reading skill. Emilie over at Smart Apps For Kids reviewed Playground 3 recently and gave it four stars.

Wubbzy's ABC Learn & Play

There is something really captivating about Wubbzy for children. I am not sure if it is the catchy tune, the fact that he is yellow (research shows that characters are immediately identified and remembered more if they are yellow, e.g. Winnie The Pooh, Pikachu, etc.), or something else. Whatever it is, it works and your child will not notice s/he is learning while playing with Wubbzy. This app has the added bonus of aligning with common core standards!
