Fractions with trains

Teaching kids Fractions may be more important than you think. Indeed, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel says: "Difficulty with fractions (including decimals and percents) is pervasive and is a major obstacle to further progress in mathematics, including algebra. ... A key mechanism for learning fractions is to be able to represent them on a number line." Our game has been specifically aligned with the following Common Core State standards: CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.1
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3

Model Solar System

Model Solar System is a simple app I use to teach the scale of the solar system to astronomy students. Simply enter the size (in inches) that you wish to use for your "Sun", and the scaled distances and sizes of the planets will be generated. You can then measure it off in your own neighborhood. Alternatively, you can enter the total length you want for your model, and the app will scale the solar system to fit. This lets you lay it out in a classroom, football field, etc. Clicking on the individual planets will show you details of their size, mass, density, orbital period, etc. You may be amazed when you're able to visualize the true distances in our solar system!

My First Movies: Animal Antics

Turn the wiggles into giggles for little learners. My First Movies: Animal Antics, from School Zone, is a great, yet simple, first app for toddlers and preschoolers. Each of the three kid-friendly movies lasts approximately 2–3 minutes, which is perfect for this age group’s shorter attention span. In the car, at the store—wherever you are becomes a learning and entertainment adventure. Videos, in general, can present extensive amounts of information in a short time. Research indicates that very young children learn best from video programs that are composed of a number of short segments, each approaching the same subject from a slightly different viewpoint, with liberal use of rhyme and humor. My First Movies uses images, music, color, motion, and a variety of techniques to capture a child’s attention and interest—over and over again.
