Our Journey In The Hospital

The Emily Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital presents Our Journey™ in the Hospital as a patient education tool to help families of a sick child identify what they need to know before taking their child home from the hospital. Parts of this app may also be used during a clinic or emergency room visit. When a child is in the hospital, parents can be overwhelmed by nurses and doctors rushing around, speaking medical jargon. Sometimes health care professionals think they are clearly communicating, but don’t check to make sure you understand them. One way you can be sure you understand is if you are able to teach back their information in your own words.

Simply Sayin'

The medical jargon health care professionals use can be overwhelming to children, because they process information differently than adults. The Simply Sayin’™ app from Phoenix Children's Hospital uses pictures, sounds and child friendly glossary of terms to facilitate clear conversations between the healthcare provider, child, and family. Parents can also use this information to promote positive health care experiences for their children. Simply Sayin’™ is a mobile resource to help medical professionals provide developmentally appropriate explanations of medical terminology and common procedures. This app reinforces teach back techniques that have become the standard of care.

Tuli Emotions
Tuli Emotions is a game developed by IBM Argentina developers for the On Demand Community of "Ciudadania Corporativa" program. This game was developed for ASDRA (Down Syndrome Association of Argentina) which seeks to stimulate the emotions in childrens by recognizing everyday situations. The game features scenarios drawn and colored handmade by a interdisciplinary volunteer team. The child selects a "face" that represents the emotion that describes the stage and moves from the initial position to its final position. When the selected emotion is correct, the child can hear an applause and may choose to continue to the next stage. If the selected "face" doesn't match the emotion, it returns to its original position without showing any error.

Let's Go!

Prevent your child’s meltdowns, tantrums, and other difficult behaviors, by setting up an plan for success! Let’s Go! is a smartphone app that allows parents to quickly establish a fun and easy-to-use behavior management plan for a child when going out to common activities. This first Let’s Go! app covers going to a store, going to a restaurant, going in a car, going to church, and going to a birthday party. Each activity has four simple behavior goals (such as using a quiet inside voice and staying with a parent) and two individualized rewards (a smaller and a larger one). After the activity, the parent rates the child’s behavior on each goal, and then an animated reward screen shows the child how he or she did on the goals, and if they earned one of the rewards. Each activity has a link to a screen that describes some of the typical reasons for behavior problems for that type of activity and some parenting strategies that you can use in addition to the reward plan. Other special screens provide useful tips on goal setting and rewards strategies.
