Fully Free App Friday for April 4, 2014 (best free Android kids apps)

Welcome to our first Fully Free Friday for Autism Awareness Month! It's a bumper week this week with 15 fully free apps, including Furby! This week we have some apps chosen especially to target certain skills such as talking on the phone or going to the dentist. They are not necessarily "autism apps" as such and all children will enjoy using the apps, but children with autism were kept in mind when choosing them.

** Please note ** Pricing and dates are correct at the time of publishing. We endeavour to only include apps that have no in-app purchases and no advertising. Only the app's developer can control when an app is free.**

First-Then
First-Then is a digital First Then board. It is used to help children complete specific tasks. The idea is to place an image of specific task in each position with a description. The child must then complete the "First" task before moving on to the "Then" task. This app allows the teacher, parent or therapist to take pictures (from the camera or gallery) and place them in the First-Then board. They can then add a small description for each one. Simply tap on the number icon to begin adding the image. If they need to start over, simply tap the 'New' button. Once a task is complete, tap the image again and the image will be grayed out. This app contains no ads or notifications. Storage & Camera permissions are required to save and load images.

Phone Friends

*RING RING*! Hello? How are you today? It's time for a fun fake phone app! Does your child always want to use your phone but you don't want them to use your minutes? Wouldn't it be fun if your kids could hear a message from their favorite stuffed animals, TV characters, relatives, friends, whenever they want without needing to actually call anyone? Easily add your own pictures and voice recordings using a parent-lock area of the app, then let your kids call whoever you set up. The purpose of this app is not to make real phone calls or use your minutes, it's just a fun "fake" phone. Made for kids, fun for the whole family!

Miracle Modus

"It goes ding and you feel better." -- Jesse H., noted fantasy author and spouse. The Miracle Modus is a source of hypnotic rainbows and soft bells. I'm autistic, and I wrote this because I wanted something to mitigate sensory overload. I find mathematically-patterned rainbow lights very soothing. After I showed it to a couple of friends and they had similar experiences, I decided to publish it. The first time you open the app, it will make a bit of noise and draw a bunch of lines, squares, and hexes. Once it's done this it should have a guess as to how fast your device is, and be able to perform decently. This is a little unreliable still; improvements are planned.

Life Science

This app is designed for children who are 8-11 years old, elementary science teachers, and anyone interested in photography! This is truly an educational application. The app contains photographs that pertain to life science on an elementary level. Each photograph contains 3 details with audio. A photo album is displayed and a photograph is chosen. The photograph opens in full screen with numbered markers. Tap the markers and view the corresponding detail with optional audio. The concept for this application was derived from an instructional strategy I used in my elementary classroom. The use of digital photography in the classroom aided in making the abstract concrete and aided in English language development for students’ whose first language was not English. Life Science Through Photography provides inspiring photos that will stimulate your child's curiosity as well as your own!

About 1 in 100 children have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our team at Little Happy Tooth Co. has been looking after children with ASD for many years and we are passionate in promoting better oral care for all children. Some parents may find bringing their children with ASD to the dentist or brushing their teeth particularly challenging. This project, ‘Making Things Easier’, supported by the Wrigley Company Foundation and ADAF Community Service Grant, provide us the opportunity to conduct dental information workshop to parents with children with ASD, and to develop a set of visual tools and Apps to help going to the dentist and brushing the teeth easier for these children. This App is also suitable for all other children as it has a step-by-step guide to dental visit and also demonstrating clearly the technique of tooth brushing.

Furby

Feed it, speak to it, tickle it, play music for it and shake, tilt or turn FURBY upside down - over time you shape FURBY’S personality. Whether yours is a music loving FURBY dancing to the latest beats or a mischievous FURBY looking for a laugh, each creature’s likes and dislikes are molded by the way you play. From hip hop to pop, pizza or sushi, it responds differently depending on your FURBY’s personality, even if it’s a loud burp after a big meal. With a wide range of unexpected reactions, the interactive FURBY has a “mind of its own” and will let its owner know how it feels through a series of emoticons displayed in its expressive LED eyes. When owners first bring FURBY home it will speak FURBISH, and the more FURBY interacts with its owner, the more English it will start speaking. Each FURBY can also recognize another FURBY; place two side-by-side and they will interact, including dancing to the same tune or having a conversation. For additional interactive FURBY fun, use this FURBY app to virtually feed FURBY, access a FURBISH-to-English dictionary and use the FURBISH-to-English translator.
