There are so many streams of math and it covers such a wide range of ability that there seems to be no end of supply of ways of presenting and practicing math on a tablet. Over the coming weeks/months we hope to collate some lists of different kinds of math apps so that you can find exactly what you need for your child. Take a look at this list and tell us if you have a favorite that we need to add!

Math Run

So you have found that your child really likes running games and you can use them as a reward for spending time on educational apps. How about this for an idea: an educational running game! Math Run has been designed to give kids the thrill of the chase, whilst practicing their mental math. Every time the panda crashes, basic mental math problems need to be answered within the time limit to be able to continue the run. A wrong answer will end the game, with the option to pay (using game coins) to continue. Although this app has in-app purchases, there is a good load of free content for your child to enjoy.

Kids Math Game

Get ready to jump into a time machine and blast off on an adventure for the ages! This time, the evil Queen Ignorantia has stolen away the 7 ancient wonders of the world, and it´s up to the spunky brother-sister duo of Razzle and Dazzle to chase her across time and win them back. While Razzle and Dazzle are no strangers to stomping the Ignarus- they aren´t getting anywhere in their multiplication- powered time travel machine without the help of some serious smarts! Math Heroes 2: Multiplications introduces a new cast of characters learning model of the Math Heroes series. Players have to help the two intrepid time spelunkers determine where and when to go to recover each of the 7 wonders by following clues and tackling a variety of math traps and puzzles. The difficulty of puzzles increases as players “level up”, and the final challenge of each stage sees Razzle and Dazzle pitted against Ignarus guardians, adding to the sense of accomplishment. Stages are designed to build up problem-solving confidence one step at a time.

Maths in action

First impressions of this app are good. Young children are drawn to apps that look good and are not overwhelming with text. Math In Action covers addition, subtraction, sorting (according to color, size etc.) and transformation (substituting one item for another). All of the exercises involve an explanation of the concept, then consolidation by manipulation of objects, making this a great early learning app or app for children with special needs. One quarter of the content is provided in the try-before-you-buy free app, and the rest can be purchased within the app. I highly recommend taking a look.

Addition Blocks

Candy Crush Saga has been reworked as a math app! I have seen a lot of math apps try to present a simple operation such as addition in interesting ways, but this is the first monkey-free math app I have seen that children will get addicted to playing, always wanting to get to the next level and better their score.
