Best Free Apps For Moms: Ground Miles — because we are all run off our feet!
If you know me at all, you'll know that I love apps. What you may not know about me is that I am a bit of a couch potato. It's all the apps' fault, I swear! So to combat my sedentariness, I downloaded a pedometer app. If apps are going to be part of the problem, they can very well be part of the solution! Since I am already on my feet for a good part of the day, I figure I may as well motivate myself to move. This is my favorite pedometer app that I use every day.
If you would like to download this app and share your walk with me, please support Smart Apps For Kids by using our download link:
I'm a firm believer in leading by example and have noticed that my love of apps has been passed on to my children without any problem at all. Healthy physical developement is just as important as brain development at their young age, and so I want to encourage them to walk (like I used to have to do when I was their age!) They do participate in sports, but the urban sprawl and the logistics of timetabling activities for four children mean that we do a lot of traveling in the car instead of walking to their clubs.
Using a pedometer is a great way to record the most basic physical activity that moms engage in: walking. We are on our feet for a good part of the day and rather than flop on the couch when we get the opportunity, we can use our occupation to our advantage. FlyLady encourages dressing to the shoes in the morning which means putting on sports shoes, lacing them up and taking advantage of where our day takes us. Instead of throwing the wet washing in the dryer, WALK out to the line and hang it. Put the basket near the back door and WALK back and forth as you hang each item. Instead of grabbing everything you need before heading downstairs, go downstairs first and then WALK back up to collect one of the items you need and take it downstairs before you WALK up again to get the next one.
Adding little extra distances to our day can greatly increase our daily steps, which will improve our physical and mental health. Ground Miles also helps to fund World Heart Federation Programs so children all around the world can benefit too! I particularly like Ground Miles as a pedometer because:
i) BUPA do a great kids triathlon
ii) the app is easy to find amongst all of my other apps
iii) you can use it without registering
iv) it shows daily and weekly totals of walking and running
I will make a confession here. This is not the only pedometer app I use. I have another that I run concurrently because I like to take the best reading for the day since app pedometer measurement is not an exact science. The other app is also available on Android, so if you would like to download it too, then you can do so here:

Cas is embarrassingly proud of her small daily steps record of 8,000 steps. The amount recommended by health authorities is 10,000 steps in a day. Minimum. What's your daily record?
