I will warn you straight away that geocaching can be addictive. What is geocaching? It is a world-wide family-friendly activity that involves searching out little "treasures" that others have hidden away somewhere accessible by the public. Some are virtual caches, others simply markers, but most have some kind of treasure to be discovered and swapped. Finds are logged and sometimes the locations of caches are an enormous dot-to-dot picture waiting to be connected. Loads of fun for the whole family and a great way to get outside to play. OpenCaching is a completely free geocaching app that links to their website: http://www.opencaching.com/en/# Why don't you check it out and share it with your family and friends?
OpenCaching can be used immediately after download with no registration. Locations of geocaches near you are shown on a map (as long as you have GPS enabled on your device). Once found, however, you need to sign in to log your find. Tapping on the cache's pin on the map displays information about the cache, when it was created, its rating, details of what you are looking for and when it was last found. The app comes with a built-in compass, which is handy for caches hidden in more rural areas and great for homeschoolers teaching about the points of a compass.
Also included in OpenCaching is a detailed guide for beginning geocachers that covers everything you need to know about the rules and etiquette, how to hide, and tips on what to take when you go out exploring. Definitely worth checking this one out if you have heard about geocaching (from your friends' posts in your Facebook newsfeed!) and want a cost-free, ad-free app to get you started. Go for it — you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
