You can have your own horse for FREE (well, virtually anyway) - Howrse is FREE on GooglePlay (good free Android apps for kids)

Y'all might not know this about me, but I live on a small horse farm. And even though it's a small horse farm it is a LOT of work. Still, we are lucky, because most folks who have a horse-crazy daughter (or son) aren't lucky enough to be able to have them in their back yard. They have the difficult decision of whether or not they want to make the investment in a horse and all of the costs that go along with it, just to have their child decide in a few months that they'd rather play soccer instead.

Fortunately there are apps like Howrse that allow you to virtually care for a horse and manage a barn. You can even compete in different events. All of the activity with none of the pesky things like farrier bills and large piles of manure. There is a large online community of other horse lovers to compete and communicate with.

Maybe if your child can thrive in the virtual horse world you can start talking about that actual pony.

Howrse is FREE on GooglePlay.
